Thomas Ewing French: A Short Biography
Thomas Ewing French: A Short Biography
Thomas Ewing French is perhaps the most influential and consequential man that you have never heard of. His work made the technological achievements of the twentieth century possible -- and may have a good deal to do with why you are here right now.
French’s 1910 book, “Engineering Drawing,” established the first truly universal language. It allowed craftsmen, architects, and engineers all over the world to trade ideas and cooperate on large projects involving hundreds, even thousands of people. You and I use this language to trade ideas about woodworking, and it’s a safe bet the every manufactured thing in our respective homes and workshops was preceded by an engineering drawing.
The long history of engineering drawing and Tom French’s efforts to make it universally understood is a fascinating story. I tell this story on Miles Nielsen's podcast, “Like a Man.” If you’re a woodworker who relies on plans, you may be interested. And if you’re a woodworker who also enjoys intercollegiate sports, you will definitely be interested!
